Super Celia!!! | Litspiration Challenge #2

Celia is an incredibly important character in The House of the Scorpion. She cares so much for Matt. Everything that she does, she does with the goodness of her heart. Unfortunately for her, she has had a difficult past. This post represents her life story, as she told Matt. There is a chapter entitled: Celia’s Story.  There are a couple pages with her explaining her background and how she went from being a slave on an assembly line to being a servant for El Patron.  Here’s the first bit:

"When I was a young girl, I lived in Aztl├ín. I worked in a factory. All day I sat on an assembly line and put tiny squares into tiny holes with a pair of tweezers. I thought I'd go blind! We lived in a big gray building with windows so small, you couldn't put your head outside. That was to keep the girls from running away. At night, we climbed to the roof and looked north across the border…. (there’s more but it’s like 7 paragraphs long.) Page 141

With this knowledge and everything we already know about her personality, we know that Celia is a round character.

-------------------------------

Celia got the junior cook to do her cooking so she and Matt go spend time together. This represents Celia’s loving personality and loyalty through her speech. “‘Finish the soup for me, would you?’ she told a junior cook. She took Matt’s hand and said, ‘Let's take the afternoon off, chico. The Alacrans can eat shoes for their dinner for all I care’”(p 122). Unfortunately, the junior cook isn’t great.

Another part of her speech that represents her personality is this: “Maybe you wouldn't get into so much trouble if people explained things to you.’ she said with a sigh. ‘I didn’t poison furball.’ ‘You didn’t mean to, darling. I know your heart is good.’” (p. 140). These quotes represent action and speech.

(Blocked Tom)
By blocking Tom we’re demonstrating Celia’s loyalty and love to Matt. From p.5 when Celia was introduced to Matt to when she saw him through the prison bars, Celia has been on Matt’s side.  “‘Tom is Benito times ten! He can melt anyone’s heart with those wide, innocent eyes. Everyone falls for it, but not me. He gave Maria a bottle of lemon soda today. ‘It’s the last one,’ He said, ‘It’s really cold and I saved it especially for you,’ he said. Do you know what was in it?’ ‘No’ said Matt, wriggling with anticipation, ‘Pee! Can you believe it?’” (p 13)  Through the course of the story, Celia is unwavering in her support for Matt and dislike of Tom. She doesn’t really change throughout the story. Thus, she is a static character.

By creating a cooking blog we demonstrate Celia’s actions as her role as a chef at the Big House. Cooking is a part of Celia’s life and an important part of her character. Through the story there have been multiple occurrences of Celia’s cooking such as  “Even when she was asleep-and she fell asleep after long hours of cooking at the Big House” p. 6 or “Matt helped himself to Sushi, tamales, pakoras, blintzes-whatever the people in the Big House were eating.”

-------------------------------

We posted supportive comments towards the people who Celia thinks is ‘good’. This shows Celia’s effect on others. She is ever the calm and encouraging presence that can help any of the characters. “Don’t cry, mi Vida. I love you more than anything in the world” -p. 6 or “‘I love you, Celia.’ Matt said impulsively, putting his arms around her. ‘And I love you,’ she said softly, hugging him back. It felt so safe then. Matt wished he could hide in her apartment forever and forget about the Alacrans.” (p 143)

-------------------------------

This shows the people that Celia likes. Some of them include Matt, Maria and Tam lin. We also followed people or companies that Celia would of liked for example: Nutella, Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver! As you can see, there Tom or Felicia aren't on here because they don’t like each other. This shows effect on others since some people like her because of her actions, and some people don’t. (Who like her, Who doesn't)

Some evidence about who she likes and who she dosen’t is here:
“‘I love you, Celia.’ Matt said impulsively, putting his arms around her. ‘And I love you,’ she said softly, hugging him back. It felt so safe then. Matt wished he could hide in her apartment forever and forget about the Alacrans.” (p 143)

Thoughts of others about Celia have quite a range. Felicia doesn’t particularly like her, as you can see here.  But Matt really loves her. Tom has no particular interest in Celia because his mother is Felica.. El Patron likes Celia enough. He lets her stay because of her skills. He also sets Matt in her charge. “He laughed and asked if I had any skills. From that moment on, I belonged to El Patron. He’ll never let me go.” (p 143)
